Fresno Prosecutor Stabbed During Campaign Commercial Shoot at Courthouse Park

A senior Fresno County deputy district attorney was stabbed Thursday afternoon at Courthouse Park in downtown Fresno while filming a campaign commercial for a judicial candidate during a break. The prosecutor was conscious and talking during transport to Community Regional Medical Center. District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp declined to release his name, citing respect for his family. “We are outraged and deeply saddened by the brazen stabbing of one of our Senior Deputy District Attorneys this afternoon in Courthouse Park,” Smittcamp said. “There is no place in our community for violence against those who serve it.”

The attack occurred while the prosecutor was on break, participating in a television commercial shoot for Ashley S. Paulson, Fresno’s chief assistant city attorney and a candidate for Fresno County Superior Court judge. Paulson described the victim as a longtime colleague and close friend. “I am shocked and heartbroken by the violent attack on a Senior Deputy District Attorney who, while on break this afternoon, was with me and members of our campaign shooting a television commercial at Courthouse Park,” she said.

Crawford has a criminal history and has served time in state prison, according to law enforcement officials. Sheriff’s detectives, working with the Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium (MAGEC), are investigating the motive. The Sheriff’s Office described the attack as unprovoked.
