Tyler Maxwell represents District 4 on the Fresno City Council and serves as Council Vice President. A fourth-generation resident of the district in east-central Fresno, he worked for the Fresno County Probation Department and Fresno Police Department on youth rehabilitation and crime-victim services, and served as Public Safety Director for then-Councilmember Nelson Esparza before winning election to the council himself in 2020 at age 28, making him the council’s youngest member at the time. He authored the Zero Fare Clean Air Act, which suspended Fresno bus fares during the COVID-19 pandemic and made Fresno the largest U.S. city to do so at the time, and planted 100 trees in his district within his first 100 days in office.
Maxwell was one of four council members accused in 2022 by colleague Garry Bredefeld of misusing district operational budgets. He pushed back directly, saying, “I find it incredibly ironic and disingenuous that the council member criticizing me for purchasing newsletters for communicating with my 80,000 residents is the same council member that is spending tens of thousands of dollars, of taxpayer dollars, city resources and staff time to put on bogus press conferences every other week.” He joined his colleagues in stating the spending followed the normal, lawful city budget process and had been reviewed by the city attorney’s office without a finding of misuse.
