Nelson Esparza represents District 7 on the Fresno City Council and currently serves as Council President, a role he has now held twice. Born in Madera to an immigrant mother from Zacatecas, Mexico, he holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from UC Riverside and a master’s in public policy from UCLA. Before his 2018 election to the council, he taught economics at Fresno City College, served as a trustee on the Fresno County Board of Education, and founded a political consulting firm. He has helped create a financing district that secured roughly $345 million in infrastructure investment for the Blackstone Corridor and downtown Fresno, and briefly pursued campaigns for the State Board of Equalization and State Senate before returning his focus to the council.
In July 2022, the Fresno County District Attorney charged Esparza with felony attempted extortion and attempting to violate the city charter, based on allegations, first raised publicly by Councilmember Garry Bredefeld, that Esparza threatened to fire the city attorney unless he cut off communication with certain colleagues. Esparza pleaded not guilty; a judge later reduced the charge to a misdemeanor, and in December 2022 the District Attorney’s office dismissed the case entirely “in the interest of justice.” Esparza acknowledged he had been angry with the city attorney and said he wished the matter had been raised with him directly rather than referred to prosecutors, while maintaining he was innocent throughout. He was also one of four council members Bredefeld accused in 2022 of misusing district operational budgets on personal expenses; Esparza and his colleagues said the spending was lawfully approved through the normal city budget process and had been reviewed by the city attorney’s office without any finding of misuse.
