Fresno Judge to Decide Teen Murder Case Thursday After Alleged Revenge Plot Over Sexual Assault

A Fresno County judge will decide Thursday whether 16-year-old Cassie Michael is guilty of murder for serving as the getaway driver in the April 2025 execution-style shooting death of 18-year-old Caleb Quick in a Clovis McDonald’s parking lot, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The trial was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was granted a two-day continuance for scheduling reasons, spokesperson Taylor Long confirmed.

Michael faces a murder charge plus an enhancement for allegedly taking part in a crime involving a gun. Prosecutors allege she drove her 16-year-old boyfriend, Byron Rangel, to the McDonald’s on Herndon and Willow avenues on April 23, 2025, where Rangel allegedly fired a silver .357 Smith & Wesson into the back of Quick’s head as Quick exited the restaurant.

Clovis police allege the teen couple wanted to carry out a revenge plot against Quick, believing he had sexually assaulted Michael’s friend at a party 10 days before the killing.

Prosecutors say Michael arrived with Rangel that night in a white Tesla, then left before returning alone — an attempt, they argue, to provide Rangel an alibi. Rangel later returned dressed in all black, including a surgical mask and hoodie, and waited for Quick to exit before following him and firing the fatal shot, police say. Surveillance video showed Michael picking up Rangel in a nearby neighborhood afterward.

One of Michael’s attorneys, Jeff Hammerschmidt, confirmed prosecutors have not offered any plea deal to the teen. He has said the evidence does not show Michael was aware Rangel had a gun or that he intended to use it.
