$50,000 Reward Offered in 2017 Fresno Shooting Death of John Graves

Governor Gavin Newsom announced October 23 that the state will pay $50,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the 2017 shooting death of John Graves in Fresno. The 27-year-old father of three was killed while stopped at a red light near Clinton Avenue and First Street.

According to Fresno police, a car pulled alongside Graves’ vehicle and one or more people inside fired multiple shots. Graves worked in his family’s automotive upholstery business. The shooting remains unsolved after seven years.

Newsom issued the reward alongside five others β€” $300,000 total β€” for unsolved murders in San Mateo, Sacramento, San Diego, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties. Under California law, law enforcement agencies may request gubernatorial rewards in specified unsolved cases after exhausting investigative leads.

“Every family deserves answers when a loved one is taken by violence,” Newsom said in the announcement. “For the families of Michelle Matteucci, Gurmej Atwal, Surinder Singh, John Graves, Darnell Smith, Eduardo Lira, and Estevan Mejia, may they soon have the justice they deserve.”

Central Valley Crime Stoppers previously offered $3,000 for information in the Graves case. The state reward brings the total to $53,000.

The Breakdown

  • State reward: $50,000 for information leading to arrest and conviction in the 2017 shooting death of John Graves
  • Incident: Graves, 27, was shot and killed while stopped at a red light near Clinton Avenue and First Street; a car pulled alongside and fired multiple shots
  • Legal basis: California law allows the Governor to issue rewards in unsolved cases where police have exhausted investigative leads
  • Contact: Fresno Police Department Sergeant Leyva at 559-621-2440

What This Means for You

The decision to allocate $300,000 across six cases statewide, including one in Fresno, was made by the Governor’s office using authority provided by California law.

What You Can Do

If you have information about the shooting death of John Graves, contact Fresno Police Department Sergeant Leyva at 559-621-2440. The reward requires information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

What to Watch

The material does not state how the Governor’s office selected these six cases from among California’s hundreds of unsolved homicides, what criteria determined eligibility, or whether Fresno police formally requested this reward or the Governor’s office identified the case independently. The announcement states only that law enforcement “may ask” for rewards in cases where leads are exhausted β€” not that they must, and not that every request is granted. Who decides which families get state support in seeking justice, and on what basis, is a legitimate accountability question when the tool itself is discretionary.

Separately: the material does not state whether similar rewards have previously been offered in Fresno cases, how many resulted in arrests, or what portion of the $300,000 total each county received in prior years. A pattern showing certain regions receive more or less attention than their share of unsolved cases would be worth knowing.
